Feeling good about the class

The ServSafe® class went well the last two days.  I had some great feedback from the participants.  Some managers who have taken the class many times said that they really like the format of the class.  I use ServSafe®  videos and PowerPoint® presentation to teach the information.  The participants grumble when I first tell them that they are going to watch videos. The believe that the videos will be boring, but they really seem to retain the information.  I credit the blended learning process:

  • Reading
  • Sharing stories
  • Video
  • PowerPoint
  • Quizzes
  •  Instructor explanation
I also take advantage of the time with our managers to share information that is relative to our specific brands.  When I explain to managers the connection between what they do at work every day and what ServSafe® teaches them to do, they seem to grasp the importance of their everyday tasks.

Scores will be in next week - I hope they all did as well as my last group!

ServSafe Food Safety Training

I am teaching ServSafe the next two days. That is one of my favorite parts of my job.  I love the challenge of sharing the information in a way that keeps the participants engaged. If you have ever taught, or attended a food safety class, you know what a challenge that can be.  Managers are not anxious to attend the class because they think it is going to be dry and boring.  It is my goal to entertain them while I help them to retain the information.  After two days of instruction - it is up to them to take the test and, hopefully, pass.  It is always gratifying when managers thank me for helping them to do well on the test.  I always give them the credit - "you are the one who had to remember the material and pass the test" - but they are thankful that I presented the information to them in a way that helped them to learn it.  That is the best part of being a trainer!

After ServSafe...vacation!  I really need to take this time off from work and 'unplug'.

Follow up on attiude

Today I revisited the location where the person with the attitude problem works. I was happy to talk to the RGM about the situation.  He said that she came to him and asked why I hadn't come directly to her with the issues. He explained that I felt that she wasn't being respectful and appreciative of my feedback/coaching.  Later she asked me if I felt that her attitude was improved. I told her yes and I also told her that I was glad she spoke to her manager about the situation. I agreed that I would come to her in the future with any problems. I also told her that if she had any questions or problems, she could come to me about them.  It was good to have a conversation about the problem and to work it out. It isn't always that simple, but when a person wants to do better at their job, as this young lady does, they will work it out.  I hope that she continues to grow and develop as a manager and that she is successful.

Sometimes we have to take different approaches to resolve issues.  Everything can't be handled exactly the same way.

Good week

There have been some stressful and unfulfilling weeks at work, but this week has been good.  I have visited with several managers who are in training. They are doing very well.  I am happy with the quality of managers we have been bringing on board.  These are some experienced, enthusiastic people with great attitudes and work ethics.  I feel like I have stepped up my communication with them and evaluation of their progress.  All in all, I think we have hired some great people and the managers who are training them are doing a great job.  It is a wonderful feeling to see the shared success of the trainer and trainee.

Dealing with attitude

I had an experience today that was very annoying.  I went to work with a new employee and encountered an existing employee who has a terrible attitude.  This person just can't take coaching from anyone but her immediate supervisor. I am happy that at least he can talk to her, but it is frustrating to get the eye-rolls and push-back from her.  I feel that she thinks I am picking on her or that I have it in for her. This is not true. I just want her to do her job to the correct standards.  Why is it so difficult for some people to take direction?
I get along great with most people. I can coach, correct and train them and move on.  I have talked one-on-one with this manager and explained that I just want to help her to know where she can improve in her management skills, but it doesn't seem to help.  I don't want to drive her away or make her so mad that she quits, that will make life harder for the other managers.  I also don't want her there just because she is a management body to fill a space.

I suppose this is just a venting post.  Unless someone has some great advice on how to deal with this person. I have tried all of my tricks and nothing is working.

Still training...still writing...

I have been so busy lately.  I actually went out and did some yard work the last couple of week!  Exercising and eating right is helping me to be motivated to do more than just sit on the couch.  I have been working on my writing and, being inspired by my sister, I joined the Yahoo! contributors site.  I have a couple of things published and will be adding more soon.  Please stop by my Yahoo! page to see what I have been up to.

I taught a leadership class the other day and I decided to ask a question of the participants.  There are many times that the managers who are attending grumble about having to go to a class. I don't really understand why.  You get paid for a day that you don't have to be working in your store.  You get a free lunch and you learn something about being better at your job.  The answer I got was that they just don't like to sit all day.  I thought it was good that they would rather be working in their restaurants. I made it a point to tell them that they should be happy that they were sent to the class. It is a prerequisite to a promotion and it is for their development.  It was a good class. I felt I built a good rapport with the managers and they interacted and discussed the subjects with the group. I don't think anyone fell asleep!

I continue to read, study and learn and work to be a better trainer.  I hope you do the same!
